Psoriasis is a chronic condition characterised by scaly plaques and reddened skin. The condition is generally found on the scalp, knees and elbows. There is often an itch associated and painful skin cracks sometimes occur. The condition is lifelong with periods of exacerbation and remission. Without treatment the plaque lesions persist.
Many factors contribute to the development of psoriasis. It is an immune mediated inflammatory disease which is exacerbated by stress, sunburn, injury, obesity, smoking, alcohol and some medications.
There are several types of psoriasis classified by severity and location. Treatment options such as topical agents, phototherapy and systemic drug therapy should be discussed with your dermatologist.
